Beer in the Czech Republic http://www.prague-xperience.com/beer-in-the-czech-republic/ http://www.prague-xperience.com/beer-in-the-czech-republic/#comments Thu, 22 Oct 2009 09:23:06 +0000 Riadh http://www.prague-xperience.com/?p=1580 Beer in the Czech Republic has a long and important history. The first brewery is known to have existed in 1118. The city of Brno had the right to brew beer from the 12th century, and the two cities most associated with Czech beer, Plzeň and České Budějovice (Pilsen and Budweis in German), had breweries in the 13th century.

Hops have been grown in the region for a long time, and were used in beer making and exported from here since the twelfth century. The Czech Republic has the highest beer consumption per capita in the world.

History

picture-53In 1842, a brewery in Plzeň employed Josef Groll, a German brewer who was experienced in the new cold fermentation lager method. Their beer at the time was not of very good quality and they needed to compete. Groll developed a golden Pilsner beer, the first light coloured beer ever brewed. It became an immediate success, and was exported all over the Austrian Empire. A special train of beer travelled from Plzeň to Vienna every morning. Exports of Czech beer reached Paris and the United States by 1874.

Originally Pilsner was a specific term for beers brewed in Plzeň (with Pilsner Urquell being registered as a trademark by the first brewery), and Budweiser for those brewed in České Budějovice. Both terms have lost their original meanings by different means, Pilsner because all the imitations of the original style used the name, Budweiser because of the American Budweiser brewery, set up by a German immigrant. The problem is that the name Budweiser Bier does not historically belong to either of them, since it was used for the first time in 1802 by the “Burgess Brewery”, which exported its beer under that name to the USA in 1875 while Anheuser-Busch started operation in 1876 and their first trademark registration is from 16 July 1878. In 1911 an agreement was settled that Anheuser-Busch may use the Budweiser name in North America and in 1939 it was banned from using Budweiser by Czech breweries there.picture-33

Nearly all beer brewed in the Czech Republic is bottom-fermenting. This varies in colour from pale (Světlé), through amber (Polotmavé) and dark (Tmavé) to black (Černé) and in strength from 3-9% abv. Top-fermented wheat beer (Pšeničné pivo) is also available.

The Prague Metro http://www.prague-xperience.com/the-prague-metro/ http://www.prague-xperience.com/the-prague-metro/#comments Wed, 21 Oct 2009 08:01:15 +0000 Riadh http://www.prague-xperience.com/?p=1562 The Prague Metro is a subway, underground public transportation network in Prague, Czech Republic. It is the fastest means of transportation around the city and serves about one and a half million passengers a day, which makes it the seventh busiest metro system in Europe.

picture-52The Prague Metro comprises three lines, each of which is represented by its own colour on the maps and signs: Line A (green), Line B (yellow) and Line C (red). There are 57 stations in total (three of which are transfer stations) connected by nearly 60 kilometres of mostly underground railways. The metro service operates between 4-5 A.M. till midnight every day, with about two- to three-minute intervals between trains during rush hours. Over 620 million passengers use the Prague Metro every year.

The metro is run by the Prague Public Transit Company Co. Inc. Which manages all means of public transport around the city (the metro, tramways, buses, the funicular to Petřín Hill and the chairlift inside Prague Zoo). Since 1993, this system has been connected to commuter trains and buses and also to “park-and-ride” parking lots. Together they form a public transportation network reaching further from the city called Prague Integrated Transport. Whilst the large system is zonally priced, the metro is fully inside the central zone.

Many Prague Metro stations are quite large, with several entrances spaced relatively far apart. This can often lead to confusion for tourists, especially at the central hubs such as Můstek or Muzeum: it is not enough to merely get off at the right station; one must also choose the right way out to the surface, otherwise one can easily find oneself five or ten minutes’ walking distance from the required destination. However, in general the stations are well signposted even for those unfamiliar with local language.

picture-23Tickets

The Prague Metro is an open ticket system. Passengers must buy and validate a ticket before entering the metro platform. There are uniformed ticket inspectors who have the right to check the validity of the ticket at any time within the compulsory ticket area.

The tickets are the same for all means of transport in Prague (excluding commuter trains for single tickets). The basic single ticket (the transfer variant) costs 26 CZK (as of 1 January 2008) and allows a 75-minute ride (90 minutes during evenings, weekends and state holidays). The non-transferable ticket (costing 18 CZK) is valid for a distance of five metro stations (not including the station of validation) allowing changes between lines A, B and C, but no longer than 30 minutes in total. Since December 2007 SMS purchase for the basic single transfer ticket is possible by sending DPT to 902 06 26 (Czech operators only, valid for 90 minutes).

Short-term tourist passes are available for periods of 24 hours (100 CZK), 3 days (330 CZK) and 5 days (500 CZK).

In addition, longer-term season tickets can be bought (photo ID required) for periods of one month (550 CZK), three months (1480 CZK) or the annual pass (4750 CZK).

Slovansky dum Shopping center http://www.prague-xperience.com/slovansky-dum-shopping-center/ http://www.prague-xperience.com/slovansky-dum-shopping-center/#comments Tue, 13 Oct 2009 09:56:29 +0000 Riadh http://www.prague-xperience.com/?p=1557 Slovansky dum belongs to important historic monuments of Prague and therefore is absolutely unique among other shopping centers. Thanks to its characteristic architecture and the spirit of history Slovansky dum is a peerless shopping galery with an exceptional atmosphere.picture-22Slovansky dum was built up of two medieval houses based in the primary part of the town. Historical records say that smaller one was bought by squire Janek One-Eyed, gatekeeper in close Royal Court about year of 1414. There are speculations that he was famous chieftain and Hussite Jan Zizka of Trocnov.

During the centuries tens of holders had this house – craftsmen and tradesmen, knights, gentlemen, barons and counts. House was countlessly changed including renaissance and baroque re-buildings. But the most important change came in 17th century, when new holder, Jan Barolomej, baron Vernier de Rougemont, imperial cavalry captain and lord of Lipnice and Svetla nad Sazavou bought the house. He rebuilt it into baroque palace with geometrically fashioned French garden leading towards Jindrisska street.

picture-31This noble lineage gave to Slovansky dum an alias as Vernier palace listed in Index of Czech Republic historical monuments. In 1799 the Tuskany’s accomodated whole general staff of Russian expedition corps, including archduke Konstantin and generalissimus Suvorov. Tuskany’s started to use palace for trade and production too and next holder, Leopold Dormitzer, developed it much more by building an textile factory here. In neighbourhood many hotels, cafes and banks were established and production was about to stop. In 1873 a guild of Deutsche Kasino gained house called German house since this time.

After WWII, in 1945 the palace was expropriated and renamed to Slovansky dum (Slavic House). Here were organized gastronomical festivities, company parties, balls, concerts and meetings in following years. In year of 1997 house came in holding of PKSC. House was completely reconstructed into form of baroque/secession palace with three modern administration buildings in area of 32.000m2. Slovansky dum offers to its visitors the best restaurants in centre of Prague, shops of well known world brands, astonishing secession ballrooms and modern multi-cinema with 10 airconditioned halls and capacity 1.839 seats.

PALLADIUM Praha http://www.prague-xperience.com/palladium-praha/ http://www.prague-xperience.com/palladium-praha/#comments Tue, 13 Oct 2009 08:52:02 +0000 Riadh http://www.prague-xperience.com/?p=1552 PALLADIUM is not only a shopping gallery with the widest offer in the center of Prague but also a building with unique architecture combining historical with modern. Five floors of shops, restaurants and fun. PALLADIUM is a place for exciting experiences 24 hours a day!

* 180 shops
* 20 restaurants, bars and cafés
* the biggest underground parking in Prague 1 with capacity of 900 places
* 19 500 sqm offices

picture-21The PALLADIUM complex is one of Europe’s most exciting shopping centres due to its role as major venue for the performing arts. Taking its cue from the rich musical and historical heritage of the site, the theming will refer to famous Czech artists, writers, composers, performers and other artists.

The architectural concept for the exterior aimed at sensitively blending an historic building (a 19th century barracks) with new elements. The project revitalized a previously neglected 13,500 sqm site in the heart of old Prague. Thanks to PALLADIUM, the center of Prague has new look.

The creative design features extend to the shop fronts, flooring, handrails, escalators, columns and ceilings. The mall is naturally lit, and fountains and shopping pavilions add to the lively atmosphere. Part of the interiors form three major archeological foundings. The center also plans to exhibit some other significant founding in special showcases. Its use also find stone troughs from the former riding hall which will be used as a part of fountain sculpture in the office building court yard from Na Porříčí street.

Palace Metro http://www.prague-xperience.com/palace-metro/ http://www.prague-xperience.com/palace-metro/#comments Tue, 13 Oct 2009 08:09:17 +0000 Riadh http://www.prague-xperience.com/?p=1547 The house had its designated conception during its formation and projection. This conception went from the advantageous position of the property on the boundary-line between The Old and New Town of Prague. The palace was designed this way to be a cultural building, it is a cinema for 1000 visitors, next a vine house {Aquarium} and cafe {Vagon} for comfortable sitting, not only for cinema visitors but also for visitors of beautiful Prague and old standers from surroundings. picture-51There are billiard rooms, dancing halls, and an elevated podium for music and so on at disposal. Naturally there had to be fast refreshment and snack bar and delicatessen for those who wanted to test the cold meat at home especially.
That atmosphere was coupled with rent premises for motor – show, fancy- goods, sporting goods, and electrical appliances and for the representations of a number of firms. There was always counted with renters living there in order to be the palace a bright house.
After nationalization

picture-2The house declined gradually. The luxury equipment of the firm was lost, damaged, its renovation and repairs were made withouth a proper conception and with an aim to common running of the enterpise. The cinema was likvidated gradually, first it served as a testing department and later a deposit of the National theatre. There are 31 renters in the flats and 21 firms in non-residential premises. Present situation The house is on hand of 8 part owners, children and grandchildren of builders of Palace Metro of Václav and Otylie Kleinhampl now. The part owners lead housing management in their arrangement with own METRO-PALAC s.r.o.. They repair Palác Metro step by step – repairs and reconstructions in the whole house both single rented areas as circulating area.
